Legal Status of Hemp
Farm Bill of 2018:
- Defined hemp as Cannabis with 0.3% THC or less by dry weight including all parts of the plant.
- Removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act. Hemp is no longer a Schedule I substance.
- Expands the authority of states to include broader powers to regulate the commercial production of hemp.
Iowa should pass legislation defining industrial hemp separately from cannabis in Iowa’s Uniform Controlled Substances Act. Iowa Code Section 124. This will provide parity with the federal law established in the 2018 Farm Act.
